Presentation type: Birds of a Feather Gatherings
Birds of a Feather Gatherings, also known as idea exchanges or networking tables, are relatively small and informal discussion-based gatherings, aimed at building networks and exploring ideas. Although similar in length as a roundtable, this is the only session type for which there is NO formal presentation; instead the facilitators ensure that there is time for introductions among those in attendance and come with questions or ideas to spark discussion around a particular topic area.
Session info: For emerging evaluators, transitioning from school to the world of full-time evaluation is typically full of lessons and challenges (and successes too!). Once employed, new evaluators are often alone, or among only a few, in their organizations as relatively inexperienced employees. This session aims to bring together evaluators that are currently, or soon to be, in their first few years of evaluation practice. The facilitators will guide attendees in a discussion of their early-career experiences, challenges, and advice. Potential discussion points include building a strong network of mentors and peers, adhering to personal and professional values, and the discomfort of working in ambiguity as we develop new skills. Additionally, we’ll explore where evaluation has been and the roles we hope to play in its future.
